Have you heard of Banyalbufar? It is one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca, nestled in the majestic Tramuntana mountains, right on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. You’ll love the picturesque landscape of farms, vineyards and the historic centre of the village that captures the essence of authentic Mallorcan culture and its breathtaking views.
Although Banyalbufar is not as well known as Valldemossa or Andratx, it has its own unique charm that you definitely don’t want to miss during your stay in Mallorca.
The Village of Banyalbufar
This small mountain village, also known as Bañalbufar (the Spanish version of the name, as opposed to the Catalan one), is a hidden treasure nestled between Estellencs and Valldemossa, accessible via the winding Ma-10 road that snakes through the picturesque Serra de Tramuntana. Despite its stunning location and traditional Mallorcan appearance, this charming village is often overlooked by tourists visiting the island.
Due to its challenging location, the village has remained almost untouched over the years, allowing it to preserve its unique charm and beauty. So, if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway off the beaten path, Banyalbufar is the perfect destination for you!
The history of Banyalbufar
Once upon a time, in the 10th century to be precise, there was a Moorish settlement known for its ingenious people. They gave Banyalbufar its name, which combines two Arabic words: “banya” (built) and “bahar” (sea). Thus, the name Banyalbufar paints the picture of a settlement “founded beside the sea”, a testament to its creators’ connection with the maritime world.
The story takes an interesting turn with the Catalan conquest of Mallorca in 1229. Gilabert de Cruïlles and Ramon sa Clusa took control of Banyalbufar and ruled the land and its inhabitants with an almost absolute hand, maintaining civil and criminal jurisdiction over its people.
But what is a kingdom without its heart? For Banyalbufar, it was agriculture. The villagers dedicated themselves almost exclusively to farming, with the Malvasier grape being Banyalbufar’s crown jewel, creating a wine highly esteemed by the King of Aragon himself. The landscape of Banyalbufar was like a vast vineyard, with 2,000 steps descending from the summit, each step cradling vines that produced the illustrious Malvasier wine.
Although there was a period of decline, efforts are now being made to revive the legendary Malvasier grape and bring the glory of the vineyards back to Banyalbufar. In modern times, tomatoes and other fruits have taken centre stage, continuing the legacy of agriculture that defines Banyalbufar.
The genius of the Moors still whispers through the land, with their masterful irrigation systems. The aqueducts, a marvel of engineering from the Arab period, still carry water from the mountains to the fields. The dry stone walls and water basins built by Moorish hands capture and conserve every precious drop.
